D. Dawn Maxwell also known as “the Recovery Lady” is a master’s level addiction counselor specializing in dual diagnosis and medication-assisted treatment. She is passionate about using sound recovery and biblical principles to create positive change in an addicted population by breaking the destructive generational patterns we pass down to our kids.

Dawn holds a masters degree in Media & Communications Psychology from Touro University.  After spending two years studying the effects of media messaging on the brain of those struggling with substance use disorders, she is working to change to way addiction is addressed in the media and it’s  messaging content, to create positive social change.

Dawn specializes in non-addictive medication-assisted treatment in the addiction community and holds a specialty credential as a Medication-Assisted Treatment Counselor. Dawn also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Public Relations with a minor in Marketing from Cal State Long Beach and is also a Certified Professional Coach and a Certified Recovery Coach.

Dawn is the founder, owner, and co-host of the radio talk show Recovery Talk Live http://www.RecoveryTalkLive.com which aired on KFNX 1100 and has been featured on popular stations such as KABC & KWAVE as a featured guest. She is also a contributing author for the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series and blogger.  Dawn co-founded and produced the up coming reality show Recovery Bus an Extreme Home Makeover meets Intervention style show (www.recoverybus.com) which is in post-production.

Dawn co-authored a nationally released treatment modality in naltrexone behavioral counseling and is completing a manuscript entitled View From The Curb, a supportive and compassionate manual written for the loved ones of those struggling with substance use disorders and mental illness. She is also passionate about counselor health and self-care.
